What is the Biologic width around a Tooth?

The soft tissue covers the whole mouth forming a barrier that is designed to prevent bacteria from penetrating into our bodies. In the places where the teeth emerge from the bone it has to form a cuff that will prevent bacteria from using this junction as a gateway in. To protect this junction between the teeth and the gum there is a “connective tissue attachment” that is present around all teeth. This attachment is divided into 3 main areas, the gum sulcus or gum pocket,  the epithelial attachment and the connective tissue attachment. The total depth of these tissues is 2 mm deep and is often quoted in the literature as the biologic width as shown in the image.
