Home tooth whitening or in dental office whitening.

Posted on 10.16.15

There are two main ways to whiten your teeth at-home in your leisure, or an in-the dental chair.

Since there isn’t only one “right” method , it your choice which way to go. The at home whitening uses custom made whitening trays which are filled with gel and placed on the teeth for a period of time until an acceptable result is achieved. On the other hand, in-dental chair whitening is the most time efficient way of whitening. You can have your teeth whitened in one session in the dental chair and achieve significant results. When choosing there are several things to consider:

  1. The whitening effect on the teeth increases, if the concentration of the active ingredient is higher.
  2. The active ingredient will penetrate deeper into the tooth if the whitening gel is left for a longer period of time.
  3. To achieve noticeable results with at home whitening you will need to use the trays, daily for a couple of weeks at least.
  4. After the whitening has been done, the effect will diminish over time. The rate is dependent on many factors like drinking coffee or red wine which stain the teeth.

This is why if you need to have your whitening for an even that is in the next few days or you do not want to worry about wearing the whitening trays, the treatment done in the dental office is the way to go. But sometimes you may require to use the home whitening trays too, to boost your in surgery whitening results,  though it will be required for a minimal time only.

On the other hand for those who like to be more in control and able to maintain the final outcome over time, the home whitening with trays will be the better way. Since you will be placing the trays on the teeth and can stop when the preferred shade has been achieved. After a while when the whitening is diminishing you can refresh the results by reapplying the gel yourself for a healthy and beautiful smile.
