Treating teeth with cavites in Glen Iris.

Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay or cavities, is one of the two most prevalent dental problems, alongside gum disease.

Decay occurs when bacteria adhere to teeth with a sticky, toffee-like coating, producing acids that progressively erode the tooth structure, leading to dental caries. Treating cavities promptly can prolong the life of your teeth. If left untreated, decay can advance within the affected tooth, spread to adjacent teeth, and cause pain, infection, and eventually tooth loss.

While some cavities are apparent, many develop in less visible areas where x-rays are necessary to assess their extent.

To treat decay, the infected bacteria and damaged tooth material are removed, and the cavity is filled with restorative materials. Common filling options include silver (amalgam), white (resin), porcelain, and gold. These materials are layered to restore the tooth’s original shape and function. Each material has specific properties and suitable indications, and together with Dr. Daniel Kaufman, you can select the best option for your tooth’s condition.

The image illustrates tooth staining in fissures (Image A), caused by bacteria entering the outer enamel layer and progressively penetrating to the softer inner dentin (Image B), resulting in significant tooth destruction.

If you noticed a dark spot on your teeth or there is some discomfort, don’t wait schedule an appointment with Dr. Daniel Kaufman to find out what can be done.
