Frequently I’m asked what is the best sequence to get the teeth and gums clean. Since the bacteria are in well protected layer called biofilm, we first want to break it apart. This is best done by starting with the flossing or interdental brushes. Since some people brush their teeth and unfortunately skip flossing because they think their mouth feels clean or they may be short on time or tired and flossing is postponed. Then you can brush.
After the brushing and flossing is done the major part of the bacteria have been removed and the biofilm broken down the mouth rinse can reach the bacteria and kill them. When using mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine wait 30-60 minutes after brushing with toothpaste as the benefits of chlorhexidine are neutralised with interference from sodium lauryl sulphate which is in the toothpaste, or brush with SLS free toothpaste which may have already been prescribed for you .
