Why do I have a black line at the base of my crown in Glen Iris?

Posted on 06.25.18

Dark Lines Around Dental Crowns: Causes and Solutions

Do you notice a dark line next to a tooth with a crown? It’s common for black lines to appear at the base of the crown or along the gumline. Usually, this is only a cosmetic issue—though it may be accompanied by bleeding around the crown. If you experience pain, please schedule an appointment promptly for an exam.

Whether you have a single crown, a bridge, or a tooth with a root canal treatment, the main reasons for dark lines are:

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown with receding gums:
As gums recede, the metal edge of your PFM crown may become exposed.

  • Metal staining:
Higher levels of base metals (vs. noble metals like gold, silver, palladium) in the crown alloy can darken the gum tissue in contact with the metal.

  • Cavity between crown and gums:
Decay may form beneath the crown, leading to a discoloration.

  • Silver-containing root canal sealant:
Some root canal sealants with silver may create a dark line if they leach into the surrounding tooth or gums.

How To Eliminate the Dark Line Around Your Crown

  • Replace your old crown:
Upgrading to a full porcelain crown can eliminate black lines associated with metal-based crowns.

  • Remove and fill cavities:
If decay is present, it’s vital to clean out the cavity and restore the area with a suitable filling.

If a dark line is spoiling your smile or if you want more information, ask Dr. Kaufman or schedule an appointment for a professional assessment and solution.
