Pregnancy and dental care — what every mum in Glen Iris, Malvern and Hawthorn should know.

Posted on 04.27.26

Pregnancy changes your body in ways that directly affect your oral health. Rising hormone levels increase blood flow to your gums, making them more sensitive, prone to swelling, and vulnerable to infection — a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis. Left untreated, gum disease during pregnancy has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

The safest window for dental treatment is the second trimester (weeks 14–28). During this time, the risk to your developing baby is lowest, and you’re typically comfortable enough to lie back in the dental chair. This is the ideal time for fillings, cleanings, and any necessary treatment.

First trimester (weeks 1–13): Avoid elective treatment. This is the period of critical organ development. Routine check-ups and emergency care are still fine, but we’ll postpone anything that can wait.

Third trimester (weeks 29–40): Short appointments are manageable early in the third trimester, but as your pregnancy progresses, lying flat for extended periods can be uncomfortable and may reduce blood flow. We keep appointments brief and position you at a slight angle.

X-rays during pregnancy are avoided unless absolutely necessary. If an X-ray is clinically essential, modern digital X-rays at Tooronga Family Dentistry use minimal radiation and are performed with a lead apron for full protection.

Local anaesthesia is safe. Lignocaine, the most commonly used dental anaesthetic, is considered safe throughout pregnancy when used at appropriate doses.

The most important message: don’t skip your dental check-up because you’re pregnant. Poor oral health during pregnancy carries real risks. Our team at Tooronga Family Dentistry regularly sees expectant mothers from Malvern, Glen Iris, Hawthorn East, and Ashburton and can tailor every appointment safely around your stage of pregnancy.

Have a dental concern during your pregnancy? Call or book online Tooronga Family Dentistry on (03) 9822 7006 we’re here to help.
