Tooth removal – Extractions in Glen Iris

Losing a tooth is a natural part of childhood, often met with excitement about the new, larger tooth that will replace it. However, for adults, tooth loss is rarely a cause for celebration. Sometimes, having a tooth extracted is the only viable solution for maintaining oral health.

Common Reasons for Tooth Removal:

  • Non-restorable tooth: Extensive decay causes bacteria to secrete acids that dissolve tooth material, leading to crumbling. When the remaining structure cannot support function, extraction is necessary.

  • Infection: Bacteria can invade the pulp and travel through root canals to the bone, creating an abscess, which requires tooth removal to resolve the infection.

  • Gum disease: Harmful bacteria in the gums can cause bone loss, weakening tooth support and causing mobility. If untreated, this often becomes irreversible, making extraction necessary to allow healing.

  • Crowding: During orthodontic treatment, if the jaw-tooth size discrepancy is significant, the orthodontist may recommend removing one or more teeth to align the remaining teeth properly.

  • Risk of infection: Individuals with compromised immune systems may face serious health risks if infected teeth or gums are not removed, especially before surgical procedures. Extraction in these cases is a preventive measure.

Dr. Daniel Kaufman has extensive experience in tooth extractions under sedation and general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Recognizing that tooth removal is a serious decision, comprehensive examination and discussion of all available options are provided before treatment. Please contact our practice to schedule an appointment to discuss if there is a need for tooth extraction.
