Understanding you dental exam

Posted on 08.8.15

The best way to keep your teeth for life is to have a healthy mouth. Since there are many varieties of bacteria taking advantage of the ideal moisture, temperature and food supply in our mouth, we need to have it examined periodically. Research has shown that the time frame between examinations should be 6 month.

The examination starts with reviewing your medical history to see if there are any changes. It is important to let us know if you are on any new medications or if you were diagnosed with any medical conditions since your last dental visit. I will continue with a visual examination of your Temporo-mandibulat joint, cheeks, tongue, gums and teeth.  These are all an integral part of your mouth and they are frequently overlooked. I’m searching for changes in the soft tissues, to see if there are any apparent lesions, lumps, discolourations or other areas of concerns. When examining your gums I’m searching for signs of gingival inflammation resulting from an infection in your gum and jaw bone. The examination of your teeth includes checking the integrity of crowns and fillings and the presence of decay. At times in addition to the visual oral exam I will need to take dental x-rays to shed light on areas in your teeth, your gum or your bone that are not visible to my magnifying loupes. This way I can diagnose existing conditions and write down what requires attention.

At the end of the examination I will present to you the condition of your mouth and recommend ways to keep it well and sound. If you would like to discuss the possible ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy, please call Tooronga Family Dentistry, Phone number 98227006.
