Wisdom teeth extractions

Wisdom teeth, like all molars (back teeth), start erupting in adolescents. They are the last molars to emerge, typically appearing in the late teens or early twenties. They can be beneficial if they replace missing or underdeveloped molars, such as in cases of MIH (Molar Incisor Hypoplasia) or when other teeth require removal.

Since during human evolution, jaw sizes have decreased, sometimes there is insufficient space for wisdom teeth to erupt properly. This can cause a wisdom tooth to erupt at an angle, pushing into the gum or the adjacent tooth(as shown in the image), leading to impaction. An impacted wisdom tooth cannot contribute to chewing and may become painful if bacteria establish around it, causing an abscess. This situation often necessitates wisdom tooth removal.

Dr. Daniel Kaufman  has extensive experience removing wisdom teeth using local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation, deep vein sedation, and general anesthesia.

It is important to assess the presence and position of wisdom teeth to prevent complications later. At Tooronga Family Dentistry this is as part of our comprehensive periodical exam to identify potential issues.

If wisdom teeth need to be removed, Dr. Kaufman utilizes the latest ultrasonic surgical system, which is more effective than traditional drills and facilitates efficient wisdom tooth removal.
