Just as there are so many different sizes of toothbrushes to choose from, each brush can have different bristles. In general there are three types of bristles; hard, medium, and soft. I always recommends to our patients, especially for children and seniors, the use a soft bristled toothbrush. Since there is no need for much force to disrupt the dental biofilm and allow the toothpaste ingredients to penetrate it.
Research has shown that different bristles designs are as effective when it comes to cleaning your teeth. So if you currently use a hard or medium bristled brush, try a soft bristled brush when you buy one next time and see for yourself. The use of brushes with hard and medium bristles has been shown to be slightly better at removing plaque but more harmful to your teeth and gums by stripping the enamel from the teeth and irritating the gums so that they become sore and peel off the teeth. If you feel the need to use a hard or medium bristled brush as a personal preference, I recommend using an electric toothbrush instead.
